Duraguard Protective Coating Solutions
The topcoat in a deck coating system is the layer that faces everything — vehicle traffic, foot traffic, weather, ponding water, de-icing chemicals, and the daily mechanical abuse of an active concrete deck surface. It needs to be tough, chemically resistant, fast-curing, and durable enough to protect the waterproofing layers beneath it over years of demanding service.
Durathane T is Duraguard’s aromatic polyurethane topcoat for pedestrian and vehicular traffic deck coating systems — a fast-curing, high-performance urethane wear surface engineered to top the Durathane M base coat system and deliver the traffic-bearing performance that parking decks, pedestrian walkways, and plaza decks require. Installed by Duraguard Protective Coating Solutions throughout Wisconsin and Illinois since 1993, Durathane T is the topcoat that completes Duraguard’s deck coating system.
Polyurethane topcoats are produced from two distinct chemistries — aromatic and aliphatic. The difference matters for specific applications.
Aromatic polyurethane delivers excellent mechanical performance — good hardness, strong abrasion resistance, good chemical resistance, and fast cure. It is a proven, cost-effective topcoat chemistry for traffic coating systems used in protected interior environments and exterior applications where UV stability is managed with a clear UV-stable topcoat over the aromatic layer.
The trade-off of aromatic urethane chemistry is UV sensitivity. Under direct sunlight and UV exposure, aromatic urethane yellows and chalks over time. For interior parking decks, covered walkways, and protected deck surfaces where UV exposure is minimal, Durathane T performs as a complete topcoat system. For exterior installations with direct sunlight exposure, a UV-stable clear topcoat is applied over Durathane T to manage the UV degradation — protecting the aromatic urethane layer and maintaining long-term surface performance.
Duraguard specifies the correct system configuration based on the UV exposure conditions of each installation.
High-Performance Aromatic Urethane — Tough Traffic Surface
Durathane T delivers the hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance required for a traffic-bearing deck surface. Vehicle traffic, foot traffic, wheeled equipment, and the mechanical abuse of active deck use are handled by Durathane T’s durable urethane wear surface — protecting the waterproofing layers of the Durathane M base coat beneath it.
Fast Cure — 6 to 8 Hour Initial Cure
Durathane T achieves initial cure in 6 to 8 hours, keeping deck coating installation schedules practical on active structures. Fast cure is especially critical on parking decks and pedestrian walkways where returning the surface to traffic quickly minimizes disruption to facility operations.
Chemical Resistance — Handles Traffic Chemicals
Parking deck surfaces are exposed to vehicle fluids — oil, gasoline, brake fluid, transmission fluid — as well as de-icing chemicals, road salts, and cleaning agents. Durathane T’s urethane chemistry resists this chemical exposure, protecting the deck coating system’s integrity and waterproofing performance over the service life of the installation.
Interior Use Without UV Topcoat
For interior parking decks, covered pedestrian areas, and any deck surface without direct sunlight exposure, Durathane T performs as the complete final topcoat without requiring an additional UV-stable clear coat. The aromatic chemistry performs reliably in protected interior environments where UV degradation is not a factor.
Exterior Use With UV-Stable Clear Topcoat
For exterior installations with direct sunlight exposure, Durathane T is used in combination with a UV-stable clear topcoat applied over the cured Durathane T layer. The clear UV topcoat protects the aromatic urethane from UV degradation, maintaining the surface appearance and performance of the complete deck coating system under direct sunlight conditions.
Engineered for the Durathane System
Durathane T is engineered as the topcoat component of Duraguard’s Durathane M and T deck coating system. Applied over cured Durathane M flexible base coat, the two products together create a complete, waterproofing traffic deck coating system proven on parking structures, pedestrian decks, and elevated concrete surfaces throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
Interior Parking Decks
Interior parking deck levels — below-grade parking, covered parking structures, and interior levels of multi-story parking facilities — are ideal applications for Durathane T as the complete topcoat. Without direct UV exposure, the aromatic urethane chemistry performs as a durable, chemical-resistant wear surface without requiring an additional UV clear coat.
Covered Pedestrian Walkways and Plazas
Covered pedestrian walkways, building entrance canopies, and sheltered plaza deck areas without direct sunlight exposure are appropriate applications for Durathane T as the final topcoat in the deck coating system.
Exterior Parking Decks and Ramps (With UV Topcoat)
Exterior parking deck levels, rooftop parking, and exposed ramp surfaces with direct sunlight exposure are installed with Durathane T plus a UV-stable clear topcoat to manage UV degradation. The complete exterior system delivers the waterproofing and traffic performance of the Durathane M and T system with long-term UV protection for the topcoat layer.
Exterior Pedestrian Decks and Walkways (With UV Topcoat)
Exposed pedestrian plazas, building terraces, and outdoor walkways with direct sunlight exposure are installed with the UV clear topcoat over Durathane T to maintain long-term surface performance under outdoor conditions.
Vehicular Ramps and Drive Aisles
Vehicular ramps, drive aisles, and turning areas in parking structures subject to heavy vehicle traffic and turning stress benefit from Durathane T’s abrasion resistance and chemical resistance as the traffic-bearing wear surface.
Durathane T is the topcoat component of Duraguard’s complete deck coating system:
Layer 1 — Durathane M Flexible Polyurethane Base Coat
Primerless application directly to prepared concrete. Creates the waterproofing membrane and flexible crack-bridging foundation. 6 to 8 hour initial cure.
Layer 2 — Durathane T Aromatic Urethane Topcoat
Applied over cured Durathane M as the traffic-bearing wear surface. Delivers hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance for pedestrian and vehicular traffic conditions. 6 to 8 hour initial cure.
Layer 3 — UV-Stable Clear Topcoat (Exterior Only)
Required for exterior installations with direct sunlight exposure. Protects Durathane T from UV degradation and maintains long-term surface performance under outdoor conditions. Not required for interior or covered applications.
Durathane T is applied over properly cured Durathane M base coat as the final wear layer in the deck coating system. Surface condition of the cured base coat is verified before topcoat application to ensure proper intercoat adhesion.
For exterior installations requiring a UV clear topcoat, the additional layer is applied after Durathane T has cured to the correct recoat window. Duraguard’s installation crews understand the application sequence, coverage rates, and cure windows for complete deck coating systems and coordinate installation around active structure schedules.
We work around your operational schedule, including nights and weekends, to minimize disruption during installation.
Duraguard installs Durathane T polyurethane topcoat and complete deck coating systems throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois including Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Waukegan, Gurnee, Libertyville, and surrounding areas.
