Durathane M — Flexible Polyurethane Base Coat for Traffic and Deck Coating Systems

Fast-Curing, Primerless Polyurethane Base Coat for Pedestrian and Vehicular Deck Applications

Parking decks, pedestrian walkways, plaza decks, and elevated concrete surfaces face a unique combination of challenges that standard floor coating systems are not designed to handle — vehicle traffic, freeze-thaw cycling, ponding water, thermal movement, and the constant stress of a concrete structure that flexes and moves with load and temperature.

Durathane M is Duraguard’s flexible polyurethane base coat engineered specifically for these demanding deck and traffic coating applications. A fast-curing, two-component polyurethane base coat with excellent elongation and primerless application, Durathane M creates the flexible, waterproofing foundation that traffic and deck coating systems require to perform on elevated and exposed concrete surfaces. Installed by Duraguard Protective Coating Solutions throughout Wisconsin and Illinois since 1993, Durathane M is the base coat that makes durable deck coating systems possible.

What Is a Polyurethane Deck Coating Base Coat?

Deck and traffic coating systems are fundamentally different from standard floor coating systems. Where an interior industrial floor coating is applied to a stable, protected slab, a deck coating is applied to a concrete surface that is exposed to the elements, subject to structural movement, and required to function as a waterproofing membrane as well as a traffic-bearing surface.

The base coat in a deck coating system carries the most critical performance requirements. It must be flexible enough to move with the concrete substrate through thermal cycling and structural deflection without cracking. It must bond directly to concrete without requiring a separate primer coat. It must cure quickly enough to keep installation schedules practical on occupied or active structures. And it must create a continuous, waterproofing film that protects the concrete substrate from water infiltration, freeze-thaw damage, and the chemical exposure of vehicle traffic.

Durathane M is engineered to meet all of these requirements as the base coat in Duraguard’s deck and traffic coating systems.

Why Durathane M?

Flexible Polyurethane — Moves With the Structure
Durathane M’s polyurethane chemistry delivers excellent elongation — the ability to stretch and flex with the concrete substrate without cracking or delaminating. Concrete deck structures move. They expand and contract with temperature changes, deflect under load, and develop hairline cracks over time. A rigid coating system fractures under this movement. Durathane M’s flexible base coat accommodates structural movement and crack dynamics without losing its waterproofing integrity.

Primerless Application — Faster Installation, Lower Cost
Durathane M bonds directly to properly prepared concrete without requiring a separate primer coat. This primerless application simplifies the installation process, reduces material costs, and eliminates the additional cure window required for a primer coat — keeping installation schedules on track on structures where downtime is costly.

Fast Curing — 6 to 8 Hour Initial Cure
Durathane M achieves initial cure in 6 to 8 hours, faster than standard epoxy base coat systems. This fast cure is especially valuable on parking decks and active structures where returning the surface to traffic quickly is a priority. The fast cure also performs in cooler climates and lower temperatures where slower-curing systems extend installation timelines.

Excellent Elongation — Crack Bridging Performance
The elongation characteristics of Durathane M allow it to bridge existing hairline cracks in the concrete substrate and accommodate the crack movement that occurs in deck structures over time. Where a rigid coating would transmit a crack directly through to the surface, Durathane M’s flexible film spans and seals cracks, maintaining the waterproofing integrity of the system.

Waterproofing Foundation
As the base coat in a deck coating system, Durathane M creates the waterproofing membrane that protects the concrete structure from water infiltration, freeze-thaw damage, and the chloride penetration from road salts and de-icing chemicals that accelerate concrete and rebar deterioration in parking structures. Protecting the concrete substrate from water is the primary function of any deck coating system — Durathane M is the layer that delivers it.

Foundation for Complete Deck Coating System
Durathane M is engineered as the base coat for Duraguard’s complete deck and traffic coating system. Durathane T aromatic urethane topcoat is applied over cured Durathane M to complete the system, with a UV-stable clear topcoat added for exterior installations with direct sunlight exposure.

Where Durathane M Is Used

Parking Decks and Parking Structures
Parking deck surfaces face the most demanding combination of traffic, chemical exposure, and structural movement of any concrete surface. Vehicle traffic, road salt and de-icing chemicals, ponding water, freeze-thaw cycling, and the constant structural movement of elevated deck slabs all stress the coating system continuously. Durathane M’s flexible, waterproofing base coat is engineered for these conditions.

Pedestrian Walkways and Plaza Decks
Elevated pedestrian walkways, plaza decks, building entrances, and outdoor common areas require waterproofing deck coating systems that handle foot traffic, weather exposure, and structural movement. Durathane M provides the flexible waterproofing base coat these surfaces require.

Balconies and Exposed Elevated Slabs
Balconies, terraces, and exposed elevated concrete slabs in commercial and residential buildings require waterproofing protection that accommodates the movement and thermal cycling of exposed structures. Durathane M’s flexible polyurethane chemistry is the right base coat for these applications.

Bridge Decks and Ramps
Vehicular ramps and bridge deck surfaces subject to heavy traffic, de-icing chemicals, and structural deflection benefit from Durathane M’s combination of flexibility, waterproofing, and fast cure performance.

Any Exposed Concrete Deck Requiring Waterproofing and Traffic Protection
Any elevated or exposed concrete surface that requires both waterproofing protection and the ability to carry pedestrian or vehicular traffic is a candidate for a Durathane M-based deck coating system. If the surface is exposed to weather, subject to structural movement, or required to function as a waterproofing membrane, Durathane M is the base coat.

The Complete Deck Coating System

Durathane M performs as the base coat in a complete Duraguard deck coating system:

Layer 1 — Durathane M Base Coat
Applied directly to prepared concrete without primer. The flexible polyurethane base coat creates the waterproofing foundation and crack-bridging layer for the system.

Layer 2 — Durathane T Aromatic Urethane Topcoat
Applied over cured Durathane M as the traffic-bearing wear surface. Durathane T provides the surface hardness, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance for the traffic conditions present.

Layer 3 — UV-Stable Clear Topcoat (Exterior Applications)
For exterior installations with direct sunlight exposure, a UV-stable clear topcoat is applied over Durathane T to protect the aromatic urethane from UV degradation. Interior applications without direct sunlight exposure do not require the UV topcoat.

The Duraguard Installation Process

Deck coating installation begins with thorough concrete surface preparation — typically diamond grinding or shot blasting to open the surface profile and remove any existing coatings, sealers, or contaminants. Existing cracks are evaluated and addressed before base coat application.

Durathane M is applied at the correct coverage rate and film thickness to ensure complete waterproofing coverage across the entire deck surface. Duraguard’s installation crews understand the application requirements, coverage rates, and cure windows for deck coating systems and work around active structure schedules to minimize disruption.

We work around your operational schedule, including nights and weekends, to minimize downtime during installation.

Service Area

Duraguard installs Durathane M polyurethane base coat and complete deck coating systems throughout southeastern Wisconsin and northern Illinois including Racine, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Waukesha, Waukegan, Gurnee, Libertyville, and surrounding areas.
